The Activate Sport Foundation

2012 Pledge - An Active Culture

In 2012 the Activate Sport Foundation has made a pledge to reach 100 schools and inspire 50,000 children. Specifically, this will mean the introduction of our ‘An Active Culture’ programme at each of the 100 schools visited.

What is the ‘An Active Culture’ programme?

Through an extensive survey with Head Teachers across the country we have identified the real sporting needs of today’s schools. The resounding feedback is not a need for equipment BUT a need for children to benefit from quality sport & activity instruction, and the need for a programme that educates teachers and parents about maintaining An Active Culture at the school in the medium and long term.

Our An Active Culture programme for each school consists of…

  • A sports instructor delivering 1 session per week throughout a term (6-8 sessions in total).
  • A progressive curriculum left behind at the school that could be used by teachers throughout the academic year.
  • The sports instructor ideally being male in order to give the children a male role model during their learning (currently 70% of primary school teachers are female staff).
  • The creation of An Active Culture specifically for the school, i.e. engage children, teachers and parents by introducing sports and activities that can be played easily using the facilities available at the school.

In addition, we pledge to ensure a sporting celebrity visits every school to help deliver a coaching session and hold a Q&A with all the children. The celebrity visit will also turn into a school project so that children can research that person and plan questions. The celebrity visit is part of our commitment to provide schools with positive role models.
